A former Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota local government, Mr Abayomi Tella has emerged as the newly elected Chairman of the Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party.
The PDP’s seven-member State Congress Committee, led by Alhaji Kabiru Baffa Jauro, staged the congress which took place at the Hall of Sports Club, Abeokuta and was supervised by the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) team, led by Mrs.
Uzo Amala Otegbulu; the commission’s Head of Department (HOD) for Election Party Monitoring (EPM) and other observers which included the Nigeria Police, the Department of State Service (DSS), the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) ensuring a transparent and orderly process.
Speaking after his emergence at the new state Chairman, Abayomi Tella, says he will ensure the party is rejuvenated, rebuilt, and repositioned for success in the state.
He pledged that his leadership would restore the party’s heritage and identity as one of the ruling political parties.
He emphasised that the true identity of the PDP was not that of an opposition party but of a strong, ruling party. Tella added that returning to power was imminent and must happen in the next polls.
He lamented that the party had gone through a series of undeserved traumas, including unnecessary internal friction and judicial interventions.
However, he expressed optimism that the party was ready to mend fences and move forward.
“I must say that our true identity is not that of opposition. Returning to our heritage as a ruling party is imminent and must happen in the next polls.
“We must attribute the success of today’s congress to various eminent individuals who were instrumental to this God-ordained project.”
“Ogun State PDP will be proudly rejuvenated, rebuilt, revamped, and repositioned for success in the coming elections, by the grace of God,” Tella said.
While thanking the outgoing executives, Tella remarked: “We need one another, and working together again should neither be difficult nor impossible.”
“The 2027 project is the major item on the agenda for this newly elected executive, and it requires all hands on deck,” he added.
Speaking on the party’s plans, the newly elected chairman stated that the executive would implement policies and strategies to consolidate internal cohesion and unity.
He added that the party would also expand its membership by vigorously promoting the undying desire to bring much-needed relief to the people of Ogun State.
The congress saw Tella emerge victorious with 2,216 votes, decisively defeating the former chairman, Sikirulai Ogundele, who garnered just 28 votes.
A total of 2,549 delegates participated in the congress, with 2,174 accredited votes and 50 declared invalid.
