“Yes,I Influenced the choice of Abeokuta as state Capital” Obasanjo Insists

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo has again revisited how the defunct Murtala Mohammed military regime picked Abeokuta as the capital of Ogun state.
Obasanjo, who was the chief of staff of the supreme military headquarters in the regime, recalled the massive lobbying launched by the Ijebus to ensure the capital was located in Ijebu Ode, or Sagamu.
The former president, however, said during the deliberation on the new states to be created, he had to convince other members of the supreme military council why Abeokuta should be considered, ahead of Ijebu Ode as the capital.
He spoke on the issue again in Abeokuta, during the annual global Yoruba history and heritage celebration held at the June 12 cultural centre, Kuto.
Obasanjo, who was the chairman of the event, said he told the then supreme military council that Ijebu was once under the Abeokuta province and that the Ijebu province was created from the Abeokuta province.
He said his argument swayed the council to pick Abeokuta, ahead of Ijebu ode as the capital of Ogun state.
During the official visit of former president Buhari to Ogun state in 2015, the issue came up, pitching the Awujale of Ijebu Ode, Oba Sikiru Adetona against the former president.
The Awujale at a reception organized for Buhari accused Obasanjo of using his position as the second in command to late general Murtala Mohammed to influence the location of the capital of the newly created Ogun state in Abeokuta.
Obasanjo during the reception held at the PMB estate at Kobape, replied the monarch, admitting that he used his influence for the location of the capital in Abeokuta.
The former president also said that if ever Ijebu state is to be created out of Ogun state, the capital should be in Ikenne.

Ogun central will produce Ogun’s next governor in 2027, says Tunji Ishola

Former Nigeria high commissioner to the UK, Ambassador Sharafadeen Tunji Ishola has asserted that Ogun central would produce the state’s next governor in 2027.
According to the former steel minister, this is the first time that the Egbas would agree on the zoning of governorship to the Ogun central senatorial district.
Ishola, who is suspected to be interested in the state’s 2027 governorship, stated this on Wednesday while addressing members of Ogun women in politics who hosted him for his sixty fourth birthday.
The reception took place at the residence of apc national leader, Aremo Olusegun Osoba at the GRA, Ibara in Abeokuta.
The former diplomat dismissed claims in some political circles that Ogun central’s quest for the 2027 governorship poll was a calculated agenda to sabotage the dream of Ogun west to produce governor for the first time.
According to him, Egba politicians have been spearheading moves by the Ogun west to produce Ogun state governor, citing how former president Olusegun Obasanjo backed late general Tunji Olurin, while he served as his campaign manager during the 2011 polls.
Ishola also said in 2015, he backed another Ogun west candidate, prince Gboyega Isiaka, while former governor, Ibikunle Amosun, another Egba politician, sponsored Prince Adekunle Akinlade, also from Ogun west in 2019.
Also in 2023, Ishola said that Amosun backed another Ogun west candidate, Tunji Otegbeye in the governorship poll.
