Protesters Call For Gov Abiodun’s Intervention as Top Politicians Hijacks Councillorship Primary

As troubles brews in virtually all local government in Ogun State towards who becomes the party’s candidate as November 16, 2024 elections approaches, many are either pointing accusing fingers on politicians in government, others are calling for the intervention of the government.

Ahead of the Council elections, some All Progressives Congress(APC) members from Alagbagba ward in Odeda Local Government area of the State have kicked against the nomination of one Hon. Segun Kuyoro as Party Councillorship candidate as against the choice of Alhaja Kelani Opeyemi Rofiat,  who was deemed to have emerged legitimately as the APC candidate during its primary held on Saturday.

It was gathered that the delegates and some Party leaders have in the early morning of Saturday September 21, elected Opeyemi as the APC councillorship candidate for Alagbagba ward in Odeda Local Government through affirmation and her name ready for submission to the Party before it was suddenly changed to another aspirant, Hon. Segun Kuyoro.

The Protesters who shouted ‘Opeyemi la fe’, (It’s Opeyemi we want) Party Loyalty Must Be Rewarded, and many words called on the APC leadership in the State to intervene.

“We can authoritatively confirm that there is a deliberate plot to subvert the will of the people to serve the interests of some tendencies within and outside Alagbagba ward to “humiliate Alhaja Kelani Opeyemi Rofiat and bring the party to disrepute.”

The Protesters also insisted that “The so-called ‘list from above’ is a far cry from the wish of the state APC leadership of the party that all critical stakeholders of the party in each zone of the WARD be carried along.

“There was an affirmation at the Ward level, and Alhaja Kelani Opeyemi Rofiat was unanimously chosen by all the leaders of the party and members, it’s now a surprise that somebody who has not been faithful and loyal to the Party, and who do not even shown up during the affirmation exercise is now chosen above the interest of the generality of the people.

“We were surprised that the wishes of the people were suppressed by some unknown interests, whereas, Alhaja Kelani Opeyemi Rofiat who has been consistent with the Party, and who has contested the Party Primaries four times, but was persuaded by the leaders to step down, is again being maltreated this way.”

They passionately urge the leadership of the Party in the State to look into the issue and correct the aberration in the spirit of fairness and justice.

In a major breakthrough, Senator Otunba Engr. Gbenga Daniel’s bill for the creation of Ijebu State has passed its first reading at the National Assembly.

This development signals progress in the long-standing demand for a new state in Nigeria’s South-West region.

The proposed Ijebu State would comprise nine local government areas carved out from Ogun State, with Ijebu Ode designated as the state capital.

The local governments involved include Ijebu East, Ijebu North, Ijebu North East, Ijebu Ode, Ikenne, Odogbolu, Ogun Waterside, Remo North and Sagamu.

This initiative is part of broader efforts to realign Nigeria’s administrative divisions for enhanced governance.

Earlier in the year, Honourable Oluwole Oke introduced a related bill in the House of Representatives, proposing the creation of three new South-West states: Oke-Ogun, Ijebu, and Ife-Ijesa.

The proposal aims to amend the First Schedule, Part I of Nigeria’s Constitution to accommodate these states.

The push for Ijebu State has gained widespread support from traditional rulers, political figures, and community leaders.

Advocates argue that the new state would foster equitable development, improve administrative efficiency, and address decades of demands for better representation and resource allocation.

They also pointed out that of all the old provinces in Nigeria under the colonial administration, it is only Ijebu Province that has not yet become a state.

For Ijebu State to become a reality, the bill must successfully navigate further readings and debates in the National Assembly.

Senator Gbenga Daniel, a former Ogun State governor and seasoned politician, expressed optimism about the initiative’s potential to promote balanced regional development.

The creation of Ijebu State is expected to address disparities in resource distribution and governance within Ogun State
