Pensioners in Ogun State have called on Governor Dapo Abiodun to extend the Christmas and end-of-year bonus recently given to civil servants in the state to include retired workers.

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Ogun State chapter, made the appeal in a letter signed by its Chairman, Alhaji Waheed Oloyede, and Secretary, Comrade Bola Lawal.

The letter, which was made available to journalists in Abeokuta, commended the governor for the prompt payment of December pensions, describing him as a compassionate and humane leader.

The union lauded the governor’s gesture of providing bonuses to the state workforce, noting that it was a “proactive motivational gesture” that had brought joy to many during the festive season.

“Your Excellency, this is to sincerely acknowledge and appreciate you for your kind gesture at ensuring the payment of December 2024 pensions early enough for us to celebrate Christmas in our own little way,” the statement read.

The pensioners expressed gratitude for the governor’s consideration of workers’ welfare and urged him to replicate the gesture by extending the bonuses to retirees, whom they described as “vulnerable senior citizens.”

“Our dear benevolent Governor, we, your aged brothers and sisters, hereby make a passionate appeal to Your Excellency, in the spirit of the Yuletide and the approaching New Year, to extend such bonus consideration to all Ogun State pensioners, to enable us to enjoy the bliss of the seasonal celebration,” the letter added.

The union concluded by wishing the governor a happy New Year in advance and expressing optimism about his approval of their request.

The pensioners’ appeal follows the Ogun State government’s decision last week to provide bonuses to civil servants to celebrate Christmas, a move that received widespread praise from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC).

APC Chieftain Lauds Group’s Position on Yayi

…an Egba son or daughter is one whose father or mother is of Egba origin

The leadership of the “Egba Lokan Agenda 2027,” a coalition movement formed to identify and support a credible Egba indigene as the governor of Ogun State in 2027, has recognized Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as one of the potential candidates to lead the Gateway State.

In a release signed by its leader, Prof. Yemi Oke, SAN, the group stated that several Egba sons and daughters have been identified or rumored as likely aspirants for the Ogun State Governorship seat in 2027. The group provided a comprehensive list of potential governorship candidates of Egba origin.

According to Prof. Oke, the group has adopted an inclusive approach to define who qualifies as an Egba indigene capable of receiving their support, consistent with Egba culture and tradition. He emphasized, “For the purpose of our fundamental objective, and in line with Egba’s civilized disposition of equal rights to Egba sons and daughters, we have set a clear definition of ‘an Egba son or daughter.’ To this extent, we restate that an Egba son or daughter is one whose father or mother is of Egba origin.”

He then summarized a distinguished list of potential governorship aspirants of Egba extraction, which includes former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Dimeji Bankole; former Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Amb. Sharafa Adetunji Ishola; current Senator representing Ogun West, Sen. Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi), whose mother is an Egba indigene; the son of a former governor of Ogun State, Hon. Olumide Osoba; the daughter of former President, Sen. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello; and Minister of Finance, Chief Wale Edun, whose interest the group has yet to confirm. Also listed are the current Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, and the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, among others.

APC Chieftain Commends Recognition of Yayi by Egba GroupAn All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and member of the Ogun State Caucus of the Party, Hon. Kayode Oladele, expressed great satisfaction with the Egba Lokan Agenda 2027 leadership for recognizing Sen. Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi) as a credible Egba aspirant. He commended the group for their clarity and fidelity, especially considering that Egba culture and tradition treat individuals whose mother or father is an Egba indigene equally and fairly.Oladele stated, “It is a fact that Yayi’s mother was a native of Kemta, located just a short distance from the famous Olumo Rock in the heart of Abeokuta, not far from the family home of Pastor Tunde Bakare in Sodeke. Kemta comprises ten sub-sections (Igaran Mewa) such as Kemta Odutolu, Ita Sodeke, Kemta Oke-Ejigbo, Kemta Olabode, among others. Like Itoku, Kemta is famously known for its adire market, an exquisite fabric and vibrant cultural product of the women of Egbaland. It falls under Egba Ake, one of the principal sections making up Egbaland, alongside Owu, Gbagura, and Oke-Ona.”“By virtue of his mother’s ancestry, Yayi has all the rights and privileges of an Egba indigene. According to a Yoruba proverb, you cannot have a father’s family without having a mother’s family—‘Iya lo lomo.’ Consequently, all the names listed by the group have an equal stake in Egbaland, and no one can assert a more superior claim.”“It is therefore commendable that the Egba Agenda has recognized Senator Olamilekan Adeola Yayi as one of their governorship hopefuls for 2027.”

The current Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, whose second term will expire in 2027, hails from Ogun East of Remo extraction, the same sub-group that produced another former governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, who governed the State from 2003 to 2011.
